Sweep-salting

The city sweep-salts approximately 340 kilometres of footway and cycleway to minimise the impact of icy conditions on pedestrians and cyclists.

Sweep-salting involves a road sweeping vehicle sweeping away snow and ice from footways and cycleways, and then applying a salt solution to prevent them from freezing again.

As winter 2025/2026 approaches, the City has increased the number of footways that will be sweep-salted, which means that footways will now be sweep-salted to close to the same extent as cycleways.

Sweep-salting of cycleways

The City’s aim is to clear and sweep-salt a number of prioritised cycle-commuting routes at an early stage.

These run along busy major roads such as:

  • Nynäsvägen
  • Örbyleden
  • Huddingevägen
  • Bergslagsvägen
  • Drottningholmsvägen
  • Ulvsundavägen.

Sections that will be sweep-salted

The sections that will be sweep-salted are indicated in the map below.

Please note that the map only indicates which sections will be sweep-salted, not whether the footway or cycleway will be sweep-salted on both sides of a highway.

Sometimes roadworks and closures prevent us from sweep-salting adjacent sections. When the temperature drops too low, to around 8 degrees below zero or colder, the salt solution is less effective. In this case, the City switches to traditional snow removal on routes that are normally sweep-salted.

The sweep-salting vehicle can access most surfaces on streets and squares. However, there may be corners and other spots where the sweeper is not as effective.
