Snow and ice

Snow removal in Stockholm is a huge task, with almost 4,000 city streets and smaller local streets that need to be cleared, sanded and salted. Many footways and cycleways also need to be cleared.

Stockholm is one of the world’s northernmost capital cities and its winters are often characterised by snow and ice for every resident and visitor. By the autumn, the City is already beginning its preparations to keep streets, squares, footways and cycleways free of winter snow and ice.

How snow removal works

Combating icy conditions

Slippery surfaces can occur for a number of reasons during the winter season, and some places are more prone than others. The City of Stockholm combats icy conditions with salt, brine, sand or a combination of salt and sand. To some extent, it is possible to do this in advance.

If you notice a slippery surface on a footway, cycleway, street or highway, you can report it using the City’s “Tyck till” feedback app.

Report issues and submit comments about the traffic and outdoor environments (in Swedish)

Footways and cycleways

The City implements a number of measures to minimise the impact of icy conditions on pedestrians and cyclists.

Icicles

Property owners and tenant-owner associations are responsible for ensuring that ice and snow do not fall from rooftops. For this reason, you should contact your property owner first if you notice dangerous icicles on the property.
