Clean air zones

Stockholm should be a city with good air quality, which requires a range of measures to achieve. One way to improve air quality is to introduce clean air zones that reduce traffic emissions.

There are three different classes of clean air zone in the City of Stockholm:

  • Clean air zone class 1 for heavy vehicles covers most of Stockholm’s inner city.
  • Clean air zone class 2 applies in Hornsgatan and restricts older cars, light buses and light trucks. Diesel-powered cars, light buses and light trucks must meet the emission standard for Euro 6.
  • Clean air zone class 3 will apply in the area bounded by Kungsgatan, Birger Jarlsgatan, Hamngatan and Sveavägen.
