Idling your engine

In the City of Stockholm, it is not permitted to idle your engine for more than one minute. Vehicles that need to keep their engine running to operate a part of the vehicle, for example waste removal vehicles, are exempt from this requirement.

Idling an engine can be annoying and cause health problems. Emissions are especially high in winter, as engines are often colder than usual.

In order to reduce disturbance from traffic, there are rules about idling in local public health regulations.

Unnecessary idling can lead to a fine

Breaking the one-minute idling rule can lead to a police report. A public prosecutor will then investigate the incident and a conviction can result in a fine. If you see someone idling their engine for more than a minute, you can report it to the police.
