Studded tyres

By opting for studless winter tyres for your car, you are helping to make the air in Stockholm cleaner and better. Driving with studded tyres is prohibited on Hornsgatan, Fleminggatan and a section of Kungsgatan.

By law, you must use winter tyres from 1 December until 31 March if the road conditions are wintery. These can be studded or non-studded. The proportion of cars with studded tyres has decreased in Stockholm in recent years.

Streets where studded tyres are prohibited

In order to reduce the levels of dangerous particles in the air, studded tyres are prohibited on several streets in Stockholm city centre, namely:

  • most of Hornsgatan
  • Fleminggatan
  • Kungsgatan, between Sveavägen and Birger Jarlsgatan.

You are permitted to drive across Hornsgatan, Fleminggatan and Kungsgatan with studded tyres. Nor does the ban apply to cyclists or Class 2 mopeds with studded tyres.

Hornsgatan

On Hornsgatan, the ban on studded tyres is in force:

  • eastbound between Långholmsgatan and Bellmansgatan
  • westbound between the Söderled tunnel and Lignagatan.

It also includes:

  • Rosenlundsgatan between Krukmakargatan och Hornsgatan
  • Varvsgatan between Hornsgatan and Hornsbruksgatan.

Fleminggatan

The ban on studded tyres applies to the whole of Fleminggatan.

One section of Kungsgatan

The ban on studded tyres is in force on Kungsgatan between Sveavägen and Birger Jarlsgatan.

  • Sveavägen
  • Birger Jarlsgatan
  • Vasagatan
  • Torsgatan.

The extended studded tyre ban will come into effect on 1 October 2027.

The studded tyre ban contributes to better air quality

The City uses several methods to improve the air quality in Stockholm. The studded tyre ban on Hornsgatan, Fleminggatan and a section of Kungsgatan prevents the studs from creating abrasions in the asphalt and causing airborne particles that are hazardous to human health. The City also uses dust-binding agents to retain the particles in the roadway to ensure that the public does not inhale them.

The particle levels in the Stockholm air are generally decreasing, in other words the air quality in the city is improving. You can read more about particle levels and the City’s environmental efforts at Miljöbarometern.

On the SLB-analys website (Stockholm Air and Noise Analysis), you can view the quality of the air in the past 24 hours.

Exemptions from the ban on studded tyres

If you need permission to drive with studded tires where it is prohibited, you can apply to be exempted from local traffic regulations.

You can be eligible for an exemption if:

  • you have garage space that you cannot reach without driving on a street with a ban on studded tyres
  • you have a disabled parking permit
  • you are a company that operates service vehicles such as taxis, breakdown trucks, security vans, hearses, medical equipment repair vehicles, hazardous goods vehicles, etc.

Living on or near the streets in question is not a sufficient reason to be granted an exemption.
